Doing together what we cannot do alone!

The West Berks Mission District (WBMD) is a coalition of the 40+  Lutheran congregations located in the western portion of Berks County, and including Reading.  It is one of 9 mission districts (conferences) of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

About Us

In 1972, GRAIL (Greater Reading Area Involved Lutherans) was formed, initially comprised of about a dozen congregations in and near Reading.

In 1988 when the ELCA and a newly constituted Northeastern PA Synod came into existence, the West Berks Mission District was formed, incorporating the mission and congregations of the former GRAIL.

To the best of our knowledge, the West Berks Mission District is one of the most organized and active districts/conferences within the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America.

There are four priorities for mission:
  • Multiply congregational effectiveness by fostering partnerships, sharing resources and providing a communications focal point.
  • Help all people realize their potential (academically, socially, spiritually) and grow in a communities of faith.
  • Feed the hungry.
  • Strengthen the impact district congregations make in providing for those in need.
  • Provide opportunities for individuals to experience fellowship through service beyond their congregations
Paid staff includes (all part time):
Director – Dawn Baxter
Office Support Staff – Jane McClellan-Renner
And many volunteers!

The WBMD staff is overseen by a 12 person Council, consisting of Pastors and Laity within the District, elected at the District’s Spring Assembly (usually held in May). Council members serve three-year terms. Current leadership includes:
Dean – The Rev.  Colleen Cox
Liaison members with voice but no vote represent the following organizations:
NEPS Council
GRIP
