The West Berks Mission District (WBMD) is a coalition of the 40+ Lutheran congregations located in the western portion of Berks County, and including Reading. It is one of 9 mission districts (conferences) of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
About Us
In 1972, GRAIL (Greater Reading Area Involved Lutherans) was formed, initially comprised of about a dozen congregations in and near Reading.
In 1988 when the ELCA and a newly constituted Northeastern PA Synod came into existence, the West Berks Mission District was formed, incorporating the mission and congregations of the former GRAIL.
To the best of our knowledge, the West Berks Mission District is one of the most organized and active districts/conferences within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
There are four priorities for mission:
Multiply congregational effectiveness by fostering partnerships, sharing resources and providing a communications focal point.
Help all people realize their potential (academically, socially, spiritually) and grow in a communities of faith.
Feed the hungry.
Strengthen the impact district congregations make in providing for those in need.
Provide opportunities for individuals to experience fellowship through service beyond their congregations
